FAQ

What is chamber music?

Chamber music is music played by small ensembles without a conductor, one person to a part (traditionally a group small enough that they could fit in a “chamber” or parlor room). Every part matters equally in chamber music, and the group must work together to make musical decisions for a successful performance. Chamber music teaches us not only musical skills, but also how to function in a group and develop interpersonal relationships, vital skills for any profession!

What ages/levels are accepted?

We encourage applications from undergraduate and graduate music students, high school students entering 9th grade and above, professionals and adult amateurs. Instruments considered for 2024 include violin, viola, cello and bass. Students will be placed in groups with others of similar ages and playing ability. We will consider all levels of applicants, but placement in a group is contingent upon finding suitable chamber music partners. Younger students may be considered on a case-by-base basis and must be accompanied by an adult.

How do I apply?

Submit the application form at the link above. Within the application form, you will be asked to submit a link to a recording. This recording should be an accurate representation of your current playing level so that you can be placed in a group with others with similar levels of experience. Suggested repertoire includes concertos, solo pieces, etudes, prior chamber music recordings etc.

Can I apply as part of pre-formed group?

Yes! We encourage pre-formed groups. As part of your application, you will be asked to name the other members of the group. Every member of the group will need to apply separately. At least one member of the group should submit a representative recording of the group.

Are there scholarships available?

Limited partial tuition scholarships are available for students for whom the cost of attendance is prohibitive. Please contact marygrace.johnson@mail.wvu.edu for the scholarship application form.

Is on-campus housing available?
On campus housing is available upon request. Single and double occupancy rooms are available. Payments will be made directly to WVU housing upon arrival. Mealplan is required if staying in campus housing. A $10 parking fee also applies if bringing a car to campus.

Do I have to stay on campus?
Participants are free to make their own housing arrangements separately if they wish (please indicate this on the application). There are many options in Morgantown including hotels and Airbnb. Students under the age of 18 must stay in campus housing unless accompanied by an adult.
