Jason Gossett
Assistant Professor of Music EducationDr. Jason B. Gossett is
an assistant professor in instrumental music education at West Virginia
University where he teaches Instrumental Methods, History and Philosophy of
Music Education, Psychology of Music, Percussion Pedagogy, and supervises
student teachers. Prior to entering higher education, Dr. Gossett spent 10
years as a high school band director in Kentucky. Bands under his direction consistently earned
Distinguished ratings in both concert and marching performances. His marching bands consistently performed at
high levels earning a spot in KMEA state finals.
He holds the Doctorate of
Philosophy in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University and a
Masters and Bachelors in Music Education from Murray State University. An active researcher, Dr. Gossett presents
research at regional, state, and national music conferences. His research focuses on band director
practice through the lens of virtue ethics with an emphasis on how teaching
music contributes to a teacher's conception of the "good life". Additionally, he researches issues related to
the evolution of the practice of band as well as decision-making in band.
Prior to his appointment at WVU, Dr. Gossett was an instructor of music education at Oregon State University where he taught music education classes and was Assistant Director of Athletic Bands.
Dr. Gossett is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the Society for Music Teacher Education (SMTE), and WVMEA.
