Suzuki Cello Program
AGES 4+
“Perhaps it is music that will save the world.” –Cellist Pablo Casals, after hearing Dr. Suzuki’s students
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Community Music Program is proud to now offer Suzuki Method cello education for young children and their families. A holistic and child-centered approach, Dr. Suzuki believed that every child has the ability to learn and flourish in the right environment. Much like learning a language, young Suzuki cellists will begin learning by ear through imitation of small building blocks. Singing, clapping, and musical games are often part of the lesson curriculum. The student, parent, and teacher all form the “Suzuki Triangle,” where each person has an equally as important role in the learning process. Working with a Suzuki-trained teacher develops “talent,” builds strong character and relationships, and instills a love for the cello and making music. In other words, Suzuki lessons cultivate connection with the self, the other, and creative pursuit in a disconnected world.
CLASS FORMAT
Every child attends a weekly private lesson (30 min. for beginners) as well as a group lesson (typically 45 min.) with other young cellists. It is expected that small, daily practice sessions with the parent become part of the family routine. Parents are expected to attend and engage in both the private and group lesson. No prior musical experience is necessary, only a commitment to learn! After registration, a short consultation with Dr. Ellis is required to create the best learning plan. Sometimes, parents learn the cello with their child! Plant the seeds of a joyful, lifelong relationship with music for the entire family. Don’t worry! Fractional size cellos are used and can be rented. Please contact Dr. Erin Ellis at erin.ellis@mail.wvu.edu for more details.
