Composing with Technology
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

The Community Music Program is excited to offer the inaugural class of Composing with Technology designed primarily for high school students (exceptions will be granted on case-by-case basis) and taught by WVU School of Music Professors Jake Sandridge and Dr. Alan Hankers. Students will engage with fundamental skills used in the production of electronic music, sound design, and music for media and they are encouraged to create music in a style of their choosing.
Beginners are welcome; no prior experience with music, music software, or instruments is required. The class is limited to only six (6) students and priority will be given to students who can commit to attending every session.
CLASS FORMAT
The class will meet twice a week for six (6) weeks on Mondays and Wednesdays (optional). Half of the sessions are dedicated to hands-on creative activities working with audio workstations and music technology. The other half of the sessions will be dedicated to small group activities and improvisations, teaching demonstrations, and listening activities. No prior musical or software experience required. Equipment and software is provided.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, students will:- have composed a piece of music using a digital audio workstation. Students’ compositions can optionally include the use of media (such as short film) or performance with an instrument
study fundamental music composition skills, learn basics regarding the science of sound, and engage with both software and hardware associated with music technology
gain basic computer skills through practical application
engage with basic group musical improvisations with technology

A class is usually cancelled when registration is less than five (5) participants. In case of cancellation of the class, all students already enrolled will be notified immediately. Submit your registration form as soon as possible to ensure your spot. We will reach out to you to process payment closer to the first day of the group class.
